Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that can be used to repair substantial damage to the biting surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars). They are often the best option when the tooth damage is too large to be treated with a filling but not sufficient enough to require a full crown.
What’s the difference between an inlay and an onlay?
Inlays are used to fill cavities that lie between the cusps and ridges of the biting surface of a tooth. Onlays are used when the damage necessitates that the restoration extends over and beyond the cusps.

Frequently asked questions about inlays and onlays
Inlay and onlay treatment usually involves two treatment appointments at the practice. At the first, the tooth is prepared and a special mould is taken. This is then sent to the laboratory for the restoration to created.
When it is ready, you can return to the practice for the inlay or onlay to be fitted at the second appointment.
Your dentist will administer a local anaesthetic before commencing work on the tooth, so you should only feel gentle pressure during the treatment.
When the anaesthetic wears off, the affected area may be a bit sensitive. To help with this you can use over-the-counter pain medication. Steering clear of hot and cold beverages and food can also help.
If the damaged area is small enough then a composite filling may be an option. Inlays and onlays are more suitable for repairing larger areas of tooth where the damage lies within and over the cusps and ridges of the chewing surface of teeth towards the back of the mouth.
If the damage is too large and beyond what can be treated by a filling or an inlay or onlay, then a crown may be needed to restore and bring strength back to the tooth in question.
